B-E FCCLA Dominates at State Convention

By Joslyn Schrank on April 20, 2018
The South Dakota Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) held its 72nd convention at the Sioux Falls Convention Center April 8-10. About 50 high school FCCLA chapters attended state convention, with over 1500 students in attendance. The Bridgewater-Emery FCCLA chapter brought 22 students in which all competed either as an individual or with a team of one or two other students.

“I think that state FCCLA convention is an awesome experience for anyone that can go because you learn skills that you will use throughout the rest of your life such as public speaking and leadership. You may have to step out of your comfort zone but it only stretches you into a new and better you,” senior Libby Bailey said.

The following B-E students, their category and title of their project competed: junior Kinzer Glanzer and sophomore Jonah Hofer in Life Event Planning Portfolio titled “Ballerz,” juniors Sierra Wollman, Katelyn Kotas and Vanessa Hofer in Food Innovations titled “Veggin’ Out Pasta,” freshmen Sara Hofer and Marah Hofer in Illustrated Talk titled “Healthy Eating,” senior Andrea Gorriz along with juniors Ashley Horvath and McKayla Kirby in Life Event Planning Portfolio titled “Planning a Trip to Spain,” freshman Keesha Letcher and Shaylee Longe in Illustrated Talk titled “Distracted Driving,” junior Abigal Arend and Tessa Burnham in Chapter Service Project Display titled “Promoting FCS and FCCLA,” junior Cate Meyer in Say Yes to FCS titled “Where Can You Go from Here?,” Libby Bailey in Teach and Train titled “Teaching Freshman Algebra,” juniors Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank in Chapter Service Project Portfolio titled “A Roar for Help,” sophomore Kennedee Weber in Career Investigation titled “Orthopedic Surgeon,” junior Jada Wethor in Focus on Children titled “Healthy Mind, Healthy Body,” and freshmen Kerrigan Schultz and Katrina VanSickle in National Programs in Action titled “Tossing Out the Stigma of Mental Illness.”

Students competed to receive a bronze, silver or gold medal. The Bridgewater-Emery FCCLA had 12 students receive a gold for eight projects and ten students receive a silver for four projects. Everyone from the Bridgewater-Emery FCCLA Chapter received higher than a bronze. Individuals/teams who received a gold were the following: Sara and Marah Hofer, Keesha Letcher and Shaylee Longe, Abigal Arend and Tessa Burnham, Cate Meyer, Libby Bailey, Kennedee Weber, Jada Wethor and Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank. Individuals/teams who received a silver were the following: Kinzer Glanzer and Jonah Hofer, Sierra Wollmann, Katelyn Kotas and Vanessa Hofer, Andrea Gorriz, Ashley Horvath and McKayla Kirby, and Kerrigan Schultz and Katrina VanSickle.

“I truly enjoyed watching the accomplishments of the students at the FCCLA state meeting this year. Mrs. Nelson had done an excellent job preparing the students and the students themselves were very motivated and enthusiastic about their projects and presentations. All of the students were great representatives for their chapter and school and I was very proud of them,” B-E FCCLA advisor Jean Clarke said.

When an individual/team receives a top superior, it means they had the top score in their room.  When there is more than one room of the same event, the top team or individual of each room qualifies for runoffs, which can also occur if an individual/team ties with another individual/team by receiving the same score.  The judges then score them again and the highest score in runoffs determines who qualifies for nationals. The following B-E individuals/teams received a top superior: Abigal Arend and Tessa Burnham, Cate Meyer, Libby Bailey, Kennedee Weber, Jada Wethor, and Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank

The top individual/team from each category and state qualify to compete at the national competition. The following B-E individual and teams qualified for the National Leadership Conference: Abigal Arend and Tessa Burnham, Cate Meyer and Kristin Kotas and Joslyn Schrank. The 2018 NLC is held in Atlanta, Georgia June 28-July 2.

“I enjoy FCCLA because it gives people like myself new possibilities that weren’t possible before. Qualifying for national for the second year in a row is wonderful and I can’t wait to make the most out of my experience,” Cate Meyer said.

Kristin Kotas also received recognition for completing the five units for the Power of One award.  Kristin Kotas entered in the state t-shirt designing contest. Students voted on social media for most liked design. Kristin Kotas’s design was picked so she was able to represent the Bridgewater-Emery FCCLA Chapter well at state and will do the same at nationals with her state t-shirt design.

Chaperones for the meeting were Dodi Bailey, Sheryl Hofer and Lisa Schleich
