B-E Basketball Takes on Double Header at Corn Palace

By Sydney Hoffman on January 19, 2018
Bridgewater-Emery basketball took to the Corn Palace Jan. 8 for a double header against Ethan.
Girls JV basketball started the night in the Corn Palace at 5 p.m. Throughout the game, the scores were close, until the two teams were tied at the end 32-32. However, in the last 0.8 seconds, Bridgewater-Emery drew a foul against the Ethan Rustlers to shoot two. Ethan made both free throws, winning the game 34-32.

The B-E boys’ JV team played 5:30 p.m. in the DWU Wellness Center. This was another close game against the Rustlers, with B-E dropping down from Ethan by nine points early in the game; however, the Huskies came back to fight and eventually won the game 47-37.

The varsity girls continued the games in the Corn Palace that night. The Rustlers pulled ahead early in the game, but the Huskies fought hard against their quick offense. The game ended 26-77 in favor of Ethan. Eighth-grader Julia Weber had ten points for the Huskies, and Abigail Arend added nine points.

“We went into the game knowing that it was going to be a tough one, and we never gave up,” junior Tessa Burnham said.

B-E’s varsity boys finished the night in the Corn Palace. The Huskies started the first quarter off strong with a slam dunk from junior Carter Dye as he ended the first quarter with six points.

“It’s honestly easier for me to dunk it than to make a wide-open lay-up,” junior Carter Dye said.

In the second quarter, junior Sawyer Schultz swished two three-pointers back-to-back, eventually ending the half with nine points. The Huskies were up 36-24 at half-time. Going into the third quarter, Bridgewater-Emery jumped even further ahead Ethan, ending the quarter 58-44. Then, finishing off the game strong in the fourth quarter, the Huskies won 84-55. Sawyer Schultz finished the game with 24 points, Carter Dye with 20 points and Jamin Arend and Mason Potter both at 12 points.

“In the first half, we could have played better, but in the second half, we played to our full potential,” senior Mason Potter said.

The Bridgewater-Emery boys’ varsity team will play at the Corn Palace again Jan. 20 in the Hanson Classic
