Adventures to the State ‘B’ tournament

Bridgewater-Emery Boys basketball team took home third place at the State “B” Boys Basketball Tournament in Aberdeen March 14-16. The Huskies defeated Timber Lake and Viborg Hurley but lost to Clark/Willow Lake in the semi-finals.
“I was happy with our effort and the way we battled,” head coach Scott Schultz said. “I thought we bounced back well on Saturday night after a tough loss during the semis. Proud of the effort we gave all year especially during the tournament.”
The Huskies took on the Timber Lake Panthers in the first round of the tournament. B-E started out strong and jumped to an early going into halftime but the Panthers never gave up. They kept cutting the lead smaller and smaller. It came down to some big free throws by the Huskies to give them a 1 point lead. With 4.6 seconds left the Panthers had the ball. Dribbling down to the hoop the ball was knocked away by senior Jamin Arend and secured by senior Sawyer Schultz to give the Huskies a win of 55-54 to go into the semi-finals.
Leading the Huskies in the victory was Sawyer Schultz with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior Carter Dye contributed nine points and eight rebounds, while junior Chase Arend had eight points and eight rebounds. The Huskies shot 39 percent from the field and 62 percent from the line. B-E finished with 36 rebounds, 11 assists and 13 steals.
“We didn’t end the way we wanted to, but it was nice to end the season with a win,” Jamin Arend said. “The atmosphere at the arena was amazing. Thank you to all of our fans to for the support over the years.”
B-E took on the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones in the Semi-finals Friday night. It was a battle point for point throughout the entire game. The last 30 seconds of the game was big. It was all tied up with 13.6 seconds left and the Huskies had the ball. Dribbling into the lane and putting up a tough shot was Jamin Arend. The shot bounced off the rim and just fell out forcing the Huskies to foul. Putting the Cyclones at the line while they extended the lead with making both. The Huskies made a three at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies lost for the second year in a row to the Cyclones 56-55.
The three seniors powered the way. Sawyer Schultz had 25 points and 12 rebounds, Jamin Arend had 13 points and Dye had eight points and seven rebounds. As a team, B-E shot 34 percent from the field and 68 percent from the line. The Huskies had 36 rebounds and ten steals.
“It was a great way to end my career as a Huskie,” Sawyer Schultz said. I am so blessed to have gotten to play in three state tournaments with people that I love.”
Going into the final game of the season the Huskies took on the region rival the Viborg/Hurley Cougars for the second time this season. The Cougars took an early lead, but the Huskies stayed right with them. Coming out of halftime the Huskies took over the lead and started pushing points and getting defensive stops to give them the win of 65-54 and take home third place for the second year in a row.
Jamin Arend led the Huskies with 20 points and five rebounds while Carter Dye had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sawyer Schultz finished with a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. B-E shot 38 percent from the field and 76 percent from the line. The team finished with 44 rebounds, eight assists and ten steals.
Sawyer Schultz and Dye were named to the All-Tournament team. The Huskies finished their season with an overall record of 21-5.
